Tribute to Txomin Rekondo

Txomin Rekondo, a key figure in Basque gastronomy and the world of wine, was honored in recognition of his career and legacy at an event attended by some of the most prominent figures in the wine world. The gathering took place on November 12 at the Real Sociedad Auditorium (Anoeta Stadium).

The first part of the event featured five short presentations in which some of the most prominent personalities shared their knowledge, passion, and experience under the heading ‘The Future of Wine.

  • Yolanda Ortiz de Arri, a journalist from Vitoria-Gasteiz with over 25 years of experience in national and international media. Editor of the English version of Spanish Wine Lover, she collaborates with institutions such as ICEX, EDA, and the Basque Culinary Center, and is one of the most influential voices in wine journalism.
  • Dani Lasa and Sancho Rodríguez, founders of Ama Impossible Pétillant Naturel. Dani comes from the world of haute cuisine (ex-Mugaritz), and Sancho from the world of wine (Remelluri, MANIN); they are pioneers in creating artisanal, low-alcohol fermented beverages at the intersection of technology, craftsmanship, and creativity.
  • Roc Gramona, a member of the historic Gramona family of Penedès, represents the new generation committed to organic and biodynamic viticulture, combining tradition and modernity to express the essence of the Catalan terroir.
  • Ricardo and Álvaro Palacios, uncle and nephew, are protagonists of the Spanish wine renaissance. Álvaro has been key in the revival of Priorat and Rioja, and Ricardo, through his projects in Bierzo (Descendientes de J. Palacios), produces wines with deep identity and international prestige. Álvaro Palacios has achieved 100 Parker points with his L’Ermita and La Faraona wines.
  • Raúl Pérez (Bodegas Castro Ventosa), considered one of Spain’s most influential winemakers, works from his native Bierzo, revealing the essence of each vineyard with unique sensitivity. His La Muria wine has also reached 100 Parker points.

After the presentations, Lourdes Rekondo took the floor to pay an emotional tribute to her father, Txomin Rekondo, and review over 60 years of the restaurant’s history. Next, Pablo Munilla, the event organizer, presented her with a sculpture by Iñigo Aristegui, part of a project that combines art and harvest called ‘Vid a vid.

The event was born from a group of friends led by Pablo Munilla, passionate about wine, eager to bring closer future trends and pay a well-deserved tribute to Txomin Rekondo.

In turn, the organizers donated all the funds raised to Fundación Why Not, a non-profit organization with 15 years of experience dedicated to supporting people with mental health challenges through 100% free leisure activities.

To close, attendees enjoyed a tasting cocktail where they could sample various wines selected by the speakers, in a relaxed and supportive atmosphere.
